LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mark McIntire, Carpinteria May 2nd. Former Sen. Alan Simpson once observed, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters.” Integrity is defined as doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons.
At very least, Rep. Lois Capps owes her constituents the integrity to do the right thing and pay the staggering medical bills incurred by the family of Mallory Dies. These bills resulted from the confessed criminal acts of Mr. Raymond Morua while he was employed by Mrs. Capps.
It’s the right thing to do regardless of whether Mr. Morua was “officially” representing Mrs. Capps when he killed Ms. Dies with his car and fled the scene. It’s the right thing to do because civil and political liability is a lower ethical priority to restitution for wanton destruction of a human life.
Mr. Morua has done the right thing by admitting his guilt. It’s time that Mrs. Capps ask herself, “What would Walter do?” Those of us who respect the late Walter Capps’ life-long integrity are convinced that he would do the right thing rather than protecting his liability.
