During Thursday night&#8217;s<a title=\"GOP debate transcript\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3988276\/republican-debate-primetime-transcript-full-text\/\"><strong>\u00a0GOP debate<\/strong><\/a> NJ Governor Chris Christie attacked Sen. Rand Paul&#8217;s criticism of warrantless NSA data gathering, saying that he would &#8220;make no apologies, ever, for protecting the lives and safety of the American people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to his anti-terrorism record, few people know that it was on Christie&#8217;s watch as U.S. Attorney in Newark, that in, 2003 he threatened a local NJ Sheriff who uncovered a plot in which a Jersey City check cashing store (Sphinx Trading) provided the fake ID&#8217;s for two of the 9\/11 hijackers.<\/p>\n<p>In fact Christie, who reminded Republicans during the debate that he&#8217;d been appointed by President Bush the day before 9\/11, went so far in &#8217;03 as to actually threaten to arrest that Passaic County sheriff (whose office uncovered the fake ID scandal) and &#8220;shut down&#8221; his department. Such was the embarrassment to the FBI that Christie seemed bent on protecting &#8212; despite the massive counter terrorism failure that the ID lapse revealed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPHINX TRADING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I first reported the significance of that counter terrorism breach in a 2006 Huffington Post headlined <a title=\"Huff Post\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/peter-lance\/al-qaeda-and-the-mob-how-_b_34336.html\"><strong>&#8220;Al Qaeda and The Mob: How The \u00a0FBI Blew It on 9\/11.&#8221;<\/strong> <\/a>\u00a0The piece tells the story of how the FBI&#8217;s New York Office (NYO) was onto Sphinx Trading, the al Qaeda-linked New Jersey check cashing store as early as 1990 when they discovered that El Sayyid Nosair, the killer of Rabbi Meir Kahane had a mailbox there. In fact, in a 2010 piece for <a title=\"First Blood\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-news-and-politics\/44243\/first-blood\"><strong>Tablet Magazine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0I argued that the assassination of Kahane, a conservative rabbi, may have been the first blood\u00a0spilled by al Qaeda on American soil.<\/p>\n<p>Sphinx was located in the same building as the al-Salaam mosque, dominated by <a title=\"blind sheikh\" href=\"http:\/\/pubrecord.org\/nation\/10726\/blind-sheikh-flashpoint-terror-years\/\"><strong>Blind Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman,<\/strong><\/a> the so-called &#8220;prince of Jihad&#8221; who was convicted in the 1995 &#8220;Day of Terror Trial, an al Qaeda funded plot to blow up the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan, the U.N.; even the building at 26 Federal Plaza which houses the Bureau&#8217;s NYO.<\/p>\n<p>Flash forward to the summer of 2001 when Khalid AlMidhar and Nawaf AlHazmi, two of the &#8220;muscle hijackers&#8221; who flew AA Flight 77 into The Pentagon, got their fake ID&#8217;s from Sphinx Trading.<\/p>\n<p>Query: where was the FBI all those years and why didn&#8217;t they keep a closer watch on what <a title=\"Emad\" href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/?p=629\"><strong>Emad Salem<\/strong><\/a>, the heroic ex-Egyptian Army officer and star witness against Sheikh Omar in the &#8220;Day of Terror&#8221; case, called &#8220;a nest of vipers?&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.31.30-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7394\" title=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 10.31.30 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.31.30-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.31.30-PM.png 453w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.31.30-PM-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis excerpt from my 2009 HarperCollins investigative book<a title=\"Triple Cross\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Triple-Cross-Ladens-Master-Penetrated\/dp\/0061189413\"><strong> &#8220;Triple Cross&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0documents how, after Sheriff <a title=\"NYT Speziale\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/08\/01\/us\/traces-terror-fugitive-search-starts-for-man-who-said-he-sold-id-s-hijackers.html\"><strong>Jerry Speziale,<\/strong> <\/a>discovered that fact, which would have thrown negative critical light on the Feds post 9\/11, Christie, as U.S. Attorney, literally threatened to shut down his office:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A MISSED CHANCE TO STOP THE 9\/11 ATTACKS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While investigating the murder of Rabbi Meier Kahane, the FBI had discovered that El-Sayyid Nosair,<a title=\"Ali Mohamed\" href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/?p=1703\"><strong> Ali Mohamed\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> trainee, had kept a mailbox in Jersey City on the premises of Sphinx Trading, that check-cashing business at 2828 Kennedy Boulevard. Sphinx, which each year moved millions of dollars in funds between Islamic residents of northern New Jersey and the Middle East, was incorporated on December 15, 1987.<\/p>\n<p>The original incorporators were<strong> Mohamed El-Atriss<\/strong>, a forty-six-year-old Egyptian, and <strong>Waleed Abu al-Noor,<\/strong>\u00a0who was No. 130 on a list of<a title=\"172\" href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/172_unindicted_co-conspirators_Day_of_Terror.pdf\"> <strong>172\u00a0unindicted co-conspirators<\/strong><\/a> in the Day of Terror trial in 1995 and thus well known to the federal prosecutors in that case, Andrew McCarthy and Patrick Fitzgerald. (See certificate of incorporation below).<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.09.57-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7389\" title=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 10.09.57 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.09.57-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.09.57-PM.png 764w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-10.09.57-PM-243x300.png 243w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While El-Atriss later claimed he had nothing to do with Sphinx after the incorporation, he admitted under oath in a New Jersey state hearing after 9\/11 that he had sold fake IDs to two of the 9\/11 hijackers through his company All Services Plus, including the one (above) to Khalid al-Midhar: It lists a fictitious address on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>Testimony at that same hearing suggested that El-Atriss may have been in contact with another senior hijacker in addition to the ones to whom he sold the IDs.<\/p>\n<p>Fred Ernst, a detective with the Passiac, New Jersey, sheriff\u2019s department who investigated El-Atriss, said under oath:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FBI\u2026 provided information that indicates\u2026 (9\/11 hijacker) <a title=\"Hani Hanjour\" href=\"http:\/\/www.historycommons.org\/timeline.jsp?timeline=complete_911_timeline&amp;the_alleged_9\/11_hijackers=haniHanjour\"><strong>Hani Hanjour,<\/strong> <\/a>had contacted All Services Plus prior to the events of September 11th.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not indicated what those conversations contained, only that phone records between a prepaid cellular phone owned by Mr. Hanjour, had contacted Mr. El-Atriss on <em>seven <\/em>occasions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fake credentials were sent to mailboxes the hijackers maintained on the premises of Sphinx Trading\u2014located four doors down from the blind Sheikh\u2019s al-Salaam Mosque at 2824 Kennedy Boulevard. 2824 was also the location of the \u201cJersey Jihad\u201d office where al Qaeda master spy<a title=\"Ali Mohamed\" href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/?p=1703\"><strong> Ali Mohamed<\/strong><\/a> had screened his Fort Bragg training tapes for Nosair and the other World Trade Center bombing cell trainees back in the summer of 1989.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that this same location was where AlMidhar, in particular, got his bogus credentials, is not only shocking, it make me angry,\u201d says a former agent with the FBI\u2019s New York office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe JTTF in the NYO had this location back in 1990. In the mid-\u201990s they listed al-Noor, the co-owner, as a co-conspirator, unindicted in the plot to blow up the bridges and tunnels. And now we find out that this was the precise location where the most visible of all the hijackers in the U.S. got his ID? Incredible. All the Bureau\u2019s New York office had to do was sit on that place over the years and they would have broken right into the 9\/11 plot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Atriss, who maintains dual U.S.-Egyptian citizenship, denied any prior knowledge of the 9\/11 plot and served six months in jail in 2002 after the Passaic County Sheriff\u2019s Department arrested him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-11.01.37-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-7395\" title=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 11.01.37 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-11.01.37-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-11.01.37-PM.png 305w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-11.01.37-PM-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a>Although held at the time on a half million dollars bail; El-Atriss pleaded guilty to the minor charge of selling fake documents, was sentenced to time served and released.\u00a0The U.S. Attorney\u2019s office in Newark reported that he had taken a polygraph test that cleared him of any involvement in the 9\/11 plot.<\/p>\n<p>But in testimony at that bail hearing, Detective Ernst indicated that the U.S. attorney\u2019s office had been openly hostile to the sheriff\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, on the day Ernst and fellow detectives had obtained search warrants and were planning to raid El-Atriss\u2019s home and business<strong>, Chris Christie,<\/strong> the Newark U.S. Attorney, reportedly telephoned Ernst\u2019s boss, Passiac County sheriff Jerry Speziale, and threatened that if he held a press conference attendant to the raids, he \u201cwould be arrested and the U.S. Attorney would\u2026shut down the Sheriff\u2019s department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Was this another attempt by the Feds to cover up an earlier embarrassment\u2014their failure to connect the dots on Sphinx and thus uncover the hijackers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A POLITICAL POST-SCRIPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2010 Jerry Speziale abruptly resigned as Passaic County Sheriff in the midst of a re-election campaign in order to accept a $199,00 job as Deputy Superintendent of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey &#8212; the agency at the heart of Christie&#8217;s &#8220;Bridgegate&#8221; scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Passaic County Democrats later called for a federal investigation to determine whether the new job (brokered by Christie&#8217;s office) was a payoff to induce Speziale to leave the race.<\/p>\n<p>According to this report by <strong><a title=\"nj.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/news\/freeholders-call-for-probe-into-new-speziale-job-1.927764\">new jersey.com<\/a>:<\/strong> &#8220;In the immediate aftermath of Speziale&#8217;s departure, Assemblyman Scott Rumana of Wayne, told The Record that he helped arrange the Port Authority job with the Christie administration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rumana, who is also chairman of the Passaic County Republican Party, said he first met with Speziale around the time Governor Christie took office in January. Rumana said he and Speziale later met with Christie in his transition office in Trenton.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Could the appointment of the outspoken Speziale, a former NYPD detective, have been an attempt by Christie&#8217;s camp to defuse any embarrassment the Sphinx Trading scandal might have in Christie&#8217;s upcoming bid for the White House?
