He could live anywhere on the planet, but Newport, Rhode Island has captured his attention since 2010. That year, the Oracle co-founder purchased Beechwood, a Gilded Age mansion on Bellevue Avenue that was once a summer residence of the Astor family, for $10.5 million. Ellison now owns four properties in Newport, including Seacliff, an estate adjacent to Beechwood for which he <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewportbuzz.com\/wait-did-oracle-billionaire-larry-ellison-just-buy-seacliff-for-11000000\/17878\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.thenewportbuzz.com\/wait-did-oracle-billionaire-larry-ellison-just-buy-seacliff-for-11000000\/17878\">reportedly paid $11 million<\/a> in 2019. With that purchase, Ellison now <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newportri.com\/news\/20190211\/tech-tycoon-larry-ellison-buys-another-newport-estate\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.newportri.com\/news\/20190211\/tech-tycoon-larry-ellison-buys-another-newport-estate\">owns all four properties<\/a> between Rosecliff and Marble House, two of the \u201cNewport Mansions\u201d open to the public by the Preservation Society of Newport County.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/money-and-power\/a37269168\/newport-rhode-island-real-estate-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">for the full story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is Sam Dangremond&#8217;s take on the reopening of the Newport PD&#8217;s investigation into Doris Duke&#8217;s murder of Eduardo Tirella, the principal focus of my new book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Homicide-Rough-Point-Peter-Lance\/dp\/0996285598\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HOMICIDE AT ROUGH POINT:<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<p class=\"body-text\">Doris Duke\u2019s actions after the famous automobile accident in which she was involved are another reason Newport gained national prominence, especially for its architecture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">In the days following the 1966 car accident that killed her interior designer friend Eduardo Tirella under suspicious circumstances (<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/money-and-power\/a9540335\/doris-duke-barbra-hutton-feud\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/money-and-power\/a9540335\/doris-duke-barbra-hutton-feud\/\">Duke was at the wheel of the car that fatally crushed him against the gate of her estate, Rough Point, after he got out to open it<\/a>), the tobacco heiress reportedly donated $25,000 to restore the Cliff Walk and $10,000 to Newport Hospital. A few months later, she established the <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newportrestoration.org\/doris-duke\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.newportrestoration.org\/doris-duke\/\">Newport Restoration Foundation<\/a>, which has renovated more than 80 Colonial-era buildings in Newport and neighboring Middletown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">\u201cUntil her death in 1993, saving Newport\u2019s colonial architectural heritage would remain a singular philanthropic focus\u201d for Duke, her <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newportrestoration.org\/doris-duke\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.newportrestoration.org\/doris-duke\/\">biography on the Restoration Foundation\u2019s website<\/a> states. There is no mention of the accident\u2014or any deal Duke may have struck with local authorities that resulted in the police chief at the time calling it an \u201cunfortunate accident\u201d and declaring, \u201cThere is no cause to prefer charges against Miss Duke and as far as this department is concerned this case is closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">That changed in early August, however, when the only known eyewitness came forward and spoke with the author of a recently released book about Tirella\u2019s death, <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Homicide-Rough-Point-Peter-Lance\/dp\/0996285598?tag=townandcountry_auto-append-20&amp;ascsubtag=[artid|10067.a.37269168[src|[ch|1bf13546804aac3383b6b21e575a40b5[lt|\" rel=\"noskim\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Homicide-Rough-Point-Peter-Lance\/dp\/0996285598\" data-affiliate=\"true\"><em>Homicide at Rough Point<\/em><\/a>. Bob Walker was a 13-year-old paperboy intending to deliver a newspaper when he biked up to 680 Bellevue Avenue on the afternoon on October 7, 1966.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"body-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13285\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM-800x599.jpg 800w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-02-at-12.04.41-PM.jpg 1418w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a>\u201cI initially heard the argument and screaming of two people,\u201d Walker told the book\u2019s author, Peter Lance, according to <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2021\/08\/the-doris-duke-cold-case-reopens-eyewitness-speaks\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2021\/08\/the-doris-duke-cold-case-reopens-eyewitness-speaks\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe arguing stopped for a couple of seconds, and the next thing I heard was the roar of a motor, the crash, and the screaming of a man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Walker, who is now 68 and a former Marine, told Lance that he approached the scene and saw a woman get out of her car. \u201cShe was a rather tall woman\u2014regal,\u201d Walker says. As Walker approached from behind her, he says, \u201cShe spun around and looked at me. I said, \u2018Can I help you, ma\u2019am?\u2019 And she said,\u201d\u2014screaming and pointing her finger\u2014\u201c\u2018You better get the hell out of here!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Walker\u2019s statements prompted the Newport Police Department to reopen the case. \u201cI can confirm that I\u2019ve been assigned to follow up with this case due to new information provided by Robert Walker,\u201d Newport Police Det. Jacque Wuest told the <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newportri.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/08\/05\/doris-duke-cold-case-eyewitness-robert-walker-calls-newport-crash-murder\/5496245001\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.newportri.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/08\/05\/doris-duke-cold-case-eyewitness-robert-walker-calls-newport-crash-murder\/5496245001\/\"><em>Newport Daily News<\/em><\/a> on August 5.
