Eduardo&#8217;s murder happened on October 7th, 1966, just eight months before I started my journalism career as a cub reporter for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newportri.com\/story\/news\/local\/2020\/07\/18\/newport-native-peter-lance-investigates-death-caused-by-doris-duke-for-book-lsquohomicide-at-rough-p\/42452525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Newport Daily News<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em> As it turned out, Doris Duke, the fabulously wealthy heiress to The American Tobacco Company, Alcoa Aluminum and Duke Power (now Duke Energy) had killed her longtime designer and art curator, in an automobile crash outside the gates of Rough Point, her 10-acre estate on Bellevue Avenue, known to Newporters as &#8220;Millionaire&#8217;s Row.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-10-at-1.05.57-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10995 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-10-at-1.05.57-PM-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-10-at-1.05.57-PM-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-10-at-1.05.57-PM-50x50.png 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The local Police Chief at the time, Joseph Radice, quickly declared it &#8220;an unfortunate accident,&#8221; but after a two year investigation in which I interviewed dozens of surviving police officers and witnesses to the death, I proved that it was a murder, covered-up at the highest levels of the Newport Police Department. In fact, in order to clear Doris, the police actually fabricated what was described at the time as a 3-page transcript of an interrogation, which never took place.
