And within days of his election in a huge rally in Tahir Square in front of Abdel Rahman&#8217;s family, Morsi returned the favor by declaring that he would press for Sheikh Omar and other Egyptian terrorists convicted in the U.S. to be freed. As a measure of the significance of allowing Sheikh Omar, spiritual leader of al Qaeda and the accused head of <a title=\"Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al-Gama%27a_al-Islamiyya\">Al-Gama&#8217;a al-Islamiyya<\/a>\u00a0to communicate to his followers from prison, the Sheikh&#8217;s former attorney <a title=\"Wikipedia Lynne Stewart\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lynne_Stewart\" target=\"_blank\">Lynne F. Stewart <\/a>was convicted in 2005 of conspiracy and providing material support for terrorists after she had smuggled messages from Abdel Rahman to his followers during her visits to him in federal custody. She was sentenced in 2006 to 28 months in Federal prison for aiding and abetting the Sheikh. In 2010 as a result of perjury at her trial and alleged lack of remorse, she was re-sentenced to 10 years and as recently as June 28th, <a title=\"Lynne Stewart NYT sentence upheld\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/29\/nyregion\/lynne-stewarts-10-year-prison-sentence-is-upheld.html\" target=\"_blank\">the sentence was upheld<\/a> by the Second Circuit Court of appeals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Spy-Who-Came-in.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1113\" title=\"Spy Who Came in\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Spy-Who-Came-in.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Spy-Who-Came-in.png 329w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Spy-Who-Came-in-285x300.png 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/a>In 2009 after Salem had spent more than 14 years with his family in the Witness Protection Program, he reached out to Peter Lance and gave him the untold story of how he had infiltrated the blind Sheikh&#8217;s cell and could have stopped the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, but for the interference of a senior FBI official in New York.
