He was convicted in 1995 as the centerpiece of the \u201c<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/10\/02\/nyregion\/terror-conspiracy-overview-sheik-9-followers-guilty-conspiracy-terrorism.html\">Day of Terror\u201d plot<\/a><\/strong> to blow up the bridges &amp; tunnels into Manhattan, the U.N. and the FBI\u2019s New York Office.<\/p>\n<p>His imprisonment directly inspired the October 2000 <strong><a title=\"History Commons\" href=\"http:\/\/www.historycommons.org\/context.jsp?item=a092100tahaosamazawahiri#a092100tahaosamazawahiri\">bombing of the U.S.S. Cole in<\/a><\/strong> Yemen, which left seven U.S. sailors dead.<\/p>\n<p>He was cited in the infamous <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:CIA_Memo.JPG\">Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB)<\/a><\/strong> to President George W. Bush in 2001 just, weeks before the 9\/11 attacks, headlined \u201cBin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.\u201d and as recently as 2013, the terrorists who <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Blotter\/algeria-terrorists-trade-us-hostages-blind-sheikh\/story?id=18247667\">held a group of hostages<\/a><\/strong> at an Algerian gas plant, demanded his release.<\/p>\n<p>This morning at 9:40 a.m. EST <strong>Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman (OAR)<\/strong> the spiritual godfather of al Qaeda, <a title=\"Reuters OAR's death\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-tradecenter-rahman-idUSKBN15X0KU\"><strong>reportedly died <\/strong><\/a>at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, NC where he\u2019d been imprisoned for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>On any normal Saturday when the U.S. national security apparatus was fully intact, his passing would be reason to worry. But today, after <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/nyt-michael-flynn-resigns-as-national-security-adviser\/\">the abrupt exit<\/a><\/strong> of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, with Vice Adm. Bob Harward, the leading candidate to replace him,<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/cnn-2\/\">turning down the job offer<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/feb\/18\/trump-administration-chaos-white-house\">credible reports<\/a><\/strong> of chaos in the White House, there should be grave cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because Sheikh Omar was also the titular head of al-Gamma al-Islamiyya <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al-Jama'a_al-Islamiyya\">(the Islamic Group)<\/a> <\/strong>one of the world\u2019s most virulent terrorist organizations; responsible for the bloody 1997 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/luxor-massacre-group-offers-mubarak-truce-1.128892\">Luxor massacre<\/a><\/strong> in which fifty-eight tourists and four Egyptians were murdered.<\/p>\n<p>As far back as 2006 after Sheikh Omar suffered what the Feds called \u201ca medical emergency\u201d at the U.S. Federal prison in Springfield, Illinois, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.abcnews.com\/theblotter\/2006\/12\/terror_fears_as.html\">the FBI issued a threat bulletin<\/a><\/strong> warning that his death could prompt al Qaeda to launch a series of worldwide terror attacks against the U.S. in reprisal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FATWA FOR A GRISLY BROOKLYN MURDER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who <em>was <\/em>this mysterious man behind the dark glasses &#8211; an icon who may be more dangerous to the world <em>in death<\/em> than he was in life?<\/p>\n<p>I tracked his trajectory in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Peter-Lance\/e\/B001HD1116\">three books for HarperCollins<\/a><\/strong> published between 2003 and 2009 and became close to the man most responsible for putting him behind bars, former Egyptian Army officer and FBI informant <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/?p=629\">Emad Salem<\/a><\/strong> who came a hair\u2019s breath away from stopping the \u201893 WTC bombing.<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out Salem became the first deep cover operative in the \u201cwar on terror,\u201d spying for the FBI as he infiltrated the Sheikh\u2019s New York cell.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.33.21-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-10245\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.33.21 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.33.21-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.33.21-PM.png 487w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.33.21-PM-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.33.21-PM-298x300.png 298w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.33.21-PM-50x50.png 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I chronicled his amazing exploits in a 2010<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/Peter_Lance_Spy_PLAYBOY.pdf\">piece for Playboy<\/a><\/strong> that told of how, after he emerged from The Witness Protection Program, working his old jihadi contacts, Salem broke an infamous 19-year-old cold case with the help of ex-NYPD homicide detective <strong>James Moss.<\/strong> It was the 1991 Brooklyn murder of <strong>Mustafa Shalabi,<\/strong> an imam who preached at Brooklyn&#8217;s al-Farooq mosque, which had become a hotbed of radical activity in the early 90\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>That death was far more bloody and brutal than any Mafia execution and as Det. Moss and Salem worked the case, they discovered that the man who ordered the \u201chit\u201d was none other than Omar Abdel Rahman, who had held forth himself at a Jersey City mosque, ironically called al-Salaam &#8212; the \u201cmosque of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you\u2019ll see below, that mosque located on the third floor of a commercial building on Kennedy Boulevard, was a kind of jihadi junction box, which, if properly monitored by The Bureau, could have led FBI agents right into the middle of the 9\/11 plot in the summer of 2001, months before \u201cBlack Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In any case, when it comes to Sheikh Omar, many of the most historic and catastrophic events in the rise of jihadi violence, lead directly back to him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE PRINCE OF JIHAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Blinded shortly after birth, OAR had memorized the Koran by the age of eleven. He earned a degree in Koranic studies in 1972 from the Al Azhar University in Cairo, where he was influenced by the writings <a title=\"WP Sayyid Qutb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2011\/02\/11\/AR2011021106019.html\"><strong>Sayyid Qutb<\/strong><\/a>, the Egyptian intellectual who was an ardent member of The Muslim Brotherhood. Founded in 1928, The Brotherhood spawned two of Egypt\u2019s most violent terror sects: The Islamic Group run by Sheikh Omar, and the Egyptian Islamic Jihad led by Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.30.55-PM1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-10247\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.30.55 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.30.55-PM1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.30.55-PM1.png 563w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.30.55-PM1-300x211.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both Abdel Rahman and al-Zawahiri were jailed following the 1981 assassination of Anwar Sadat and by separate routes, the two of then found their way to Afghanistan; al-Zawahiri aligning with Osama bin Laden to form al Qaeda in 1988 and Sheikh Omar connecting with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a warlord and future Taliban commander who became one of the conduits for the billions in U.S. covert military aid to the Mujahedeen.<\/p>\n<p>On his return to Egypt in 1990, the blind Sheikh was subjected to house arrest, but he escaped to the Sudan and despite his presence on multiple watch-lists, succeeded in entering the U.S. in July, thanks, some say, to help from the CIA for his aid in the secret Afghan arms campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Abdel Rahman was soon preaching at the al Farooq on Atlantic Avenue and the Masjid al-Salaam at 2824 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City and before long he was linked directly to two violent homicides.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE FIRST BLOOD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On November 5, 1990, one of Abdel Rahman\u2019s devoted followers, an Egyptian emigr\u00e9 named <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/14\/nyregion\/el-sayyid-a-nosair-killer-of-rabbi-kahane-is-denied-new-trial.html\">El Sayyid Nosair,<\/a><\/strong> committed arguably the first act of violence by al Qaeda on U.S. soil \u2013 the bloody assassination of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/?p=199\">Rabbi Meir Kahane<\/a>,<\/strong> founder of The Jewish Defense League. I told that story in depth in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-news-and-politics\/44243\/first-blood\">a 2010 piece<\/a><\/strong> for <em>Tablet Magazine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-5.31.10-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-10285\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 5.31.10 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-5.31.10-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-5.31.10-PM.png 513w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-5.31.10-PM-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/a>After the killing, FBI agents seized forty-seven boxes of evidence from Nosair\u2019s home in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, proving that a bombing conspiracy was afoot with the WTC as a target.<\/p>\n<p>Among the files were maps of the Twin Towers. There was also a passage inside Nosair\u2019s notebook calling for the \u201cdestruction of the enemies of Allah\u2026 by\u2026 exploding\u2026 their high world buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Feds later proved that the blind Sheikh was the ringleader of the cell behind the bombing; demanding, in one of his sermons that his followers \u201cmount steeds of war (and) strike terror into the enemies of Islam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE NEXT MURDER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rahman soon began to quarrel with Shalabi, the Egyptian \u00e9migr\u00e9 who ran the Alkifah Center at the al-Farooq mosque.\u00a0The Alkifah was the principal U.S. office of the Makhtab al-Khidamat (MAK), a worldwide network where millions of dollars in cash was collected to support the Afghan war against the Soviets.<\/p>\n<p>After the MAK\u2019s founder was killed by a car bomb, Osama bin Laden and Dr. al-Zawahiri merged their new terror network with the MAK and soon al-Qaeda had what amounted to a New York clubhouse at Shalabi\u2019s Center.<\/p>\n<p>But even after the Soviets had withdrawn from Kabul, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash continued to flow into the MAK and it didn\u2019t take long for Sheikh Omar to covet the fortune controlled by Shalabi.<\/p>\n<p>Though the red-headed Egyptian had sponsored Sheikh Omar\u2019s entry into the United States, he balked when the blind cleric demanded half of the center\u2019s one million dollars in annual income. After that, the Sheikh began denouncing him as a \u201cbad Muslim;\u201d even suggesting the imam was embezzling the Alkifah\u2019s funds.<\/p>\n<p>On February 26, 1991, sensing that his life was in danger, Shalabi hurriedly packed for a flight to Cairo, where his family was waiting. He never made it to the airport. A few days later, a neighbor noticed that the door to his Sea Gate, Brooklyn apartment was open. The Alkifah director was sprawled on the floor in a pool of blood.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-7.29.34-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-10337\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 7.29.34 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-7.29.34-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-7.29.34-PM.png 470w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-7.29.34-PM-300x239.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was knifed, shot and beaten with a baseball bat,\u201d said the late Joint Terrorism Task Force investigator Det. Tommy Corrigan. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t some genteel thing. He was made an example of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONNECTING THE DOTS ON 9\/11<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With two acts of homicide linked to the blind Sheikh within a year of his arrival in New York, the FBI soon uncovered a pattern of evidence that, properly analyzed, might have forewarned of the September 11th\u00a0attacks a decade later.<\/p>\n<p>I laid it out in a 32 page<a title=\"1000 years timeline\" href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/1000_Years_Timeline.pdf\"><strong> illustrated timeline<\/strong> <\/a>inserted into <a title=\"1000 amazon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/1000-Years-Revenge-International-FBI-ebook\/dp\/B000FCJZ22\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483669114&amp;sr=1-5&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=petlan-20&amp;linkId=a3374953430d164633d143d9d81d7b7a\"><strong>&#8220;1000 Years For Revenge,&#8221;<\/strong> <\/a>my first book for HarperCollins on the origins of the 9\/11 plot.<\/p>\n<p>The first \u201cdot\u201d linking Sheikh Omar&#8217;s New York cell to the &#8220;planes as missile&#8221; plot surfaced back in the early 90&#8217;s when the Feds identified <strong>Sphinx Trading,<\/strong> a check-cashing store in Jersey City where both Sheikh Omar and El Sayyid Nosair had mailboxes. Sphinx was located in a building on Kennedy Boulevard several doors away from the blind cleric\u2019s al-Salaam mosque.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.41.49-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-10250\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.41.49 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.41.49-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.41.49-PM.png 458w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.41.49-PM-300x284.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/a>The second \u201cdot\u201d became known in 1994 after the feds compiled\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/172_unindicted_co-conspirators_Day_of_Terror.pdf\"><strong>a list of 172 un-indicted co-conspirators<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>in the \u201cDay of Terror\u201d case in which the Sheikh and eleven others were indicted for that \u00a0plot to blow up the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan, the U.N. and 26 Federal Plaza which houses the FBI\u2019s New York Office (NYO).<\/p>\n<p>Named on that list along with Osama bin Laden and Mustafa Shalabi was <strong>Waleed Abu al-Noor,<\/strong> co-incorporator of Sphinx Trading.<\/p>\n<p>Flashing forward to July of 2011 and the third \u201cdot\u201d \u2014 <strong>Khalid al-Midhar<\/strong> and <strong>Salem al-Hazmi,<\/strong> two of the hijackers who flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, obtained the fake I.D.\u2019s they used to board that flight at Sphinx Trading. Who did they get them from? None other than <strong>Mohamed El-Attriss,<\/strong> another Egyptian who was al-Noor\u2019s partner<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/Sphinx_Certif_of%20_Incorp%2012.15.87.jpg\">\u00a0<strong>in the incorporation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the check-cashing store.<\/p>\n<p>That begs the question of how the two \u201cbin Laden offices of origin\u201d \u2014 the FBI\u2019s NYO and the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) \u2014 could have failed to connect those dots; two of which bore a direct connection to Omar Abdel Rahman.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.42.46-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-10251\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.42.46 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.42.46-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.42.46-PM.png 501w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.42.46-PM-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As far back as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/peter-lance\/al-qaeda-and-the-mob-how-_b_34336.html\">November, 2006<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>with the publication of my third book from HarperCollins <a title=\"Amazon TC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Triple-Cross-Ladens-Master-Penetrated\/dp\/0061189413\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483669721&amp;sr=1-3&amp;keywords=Peter+Lance&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=petlan-20&amp;linkId=ebce5db20c3a0f9cc7958a9e766f66ff\"><strong>&#8220;Triple Cross,&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> I made the argument that if the Feds had only devoted a small portion of the resources they spent trying to \u201cget\u201d John Gotti, and monitored Sphinx Trading, they would have been in the middle of the 9\/11 plot two months before al-Midhar and al-Hazmi slammed into The Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>The connection of those three dots around Sphinx Trading takes on new significance when one considers the other iconic acts of terror committed in Sheikh Omar\u2019s name since the 1993 bridge and tunnel plot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A RALLYING POINT FOR JIHADIS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 1996, the FBI received the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/?p=552\"> first of three warnings<\/a> <\/strong>that bin Laden would attempt to hijack a plane to free the Sheikh.<\/p>\n<p>When al-Qaeda took credit for the bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, Sheikh Omar\u2019s release was <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1998\/08\/11\/world\/bombings-east-africa-investigation-reward-offered-clues-studied-african-blasts.html\">one of their demands<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks before the attack on the U.S.S.\u00a0Cole\u00a0in October 2000, al-Zawahiri and bin Laden appeared in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/08\/nyregion\/tape-ties-bin-laden-to-call-to-aid-sheik.html\">a video fatwa<\/a><\/strong>, demanding that the Sheikh be set free.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President's_Daily_Brief#Political_importance\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10252 alignleft\" title=\"PDB Crawford Declassified 4.10.04\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PDB-Crawford-Declassified-4.10.04.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PDB-Crawford-Declassified-4.10.04.png 455w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PDB-Crawford-Declassified-4.10.04-231x300.png 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/a>Another plot to release him was cited in that infamous Crawford, Texas \u00a0PDB and just days before the 9\/11 attacks, the Taliban government in Kabul was rumored to be offering a swap \u2014 the group of eight Western aid workers being held captive, for the Blind Sheikh.<\/p>\n<p>As late as April 22, 2005, in entering a guilty plea,<strong> Zacarias Moussaoui,<\/strong> the so-called \u201ctwentieth hijacker,\u201d <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2005\/LAW\/04\/22\/moussaoui\/\">declared that his goal<\/a><\/strong> in the aborted plan to fly a plane into the White House was to free Omar Abdel Rahman.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RASPUTIN-LIKE RESILIENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Until his death today, the blind cleric, in federal prison since 1993, has demonstrated extraordinary staying power.\u00a0In December 2006, at the time of that FBI threat warning, he was diagnosed with a tumor on his liver and rushed to a Springfield, IL area hospital after spitting up blood. It was believed at the time that he was near death.<\/p>\n<p>Then, exhibiting a kind of Rasputin-like resilience, he not only pulled through, but began to thrive. He was eventually moved to the prison-medical facility at Butner, NC where, by the summer of 2012, his continuing influence on world events became clear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPACTING THE EGYPTIAN ELECTION<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2009 following a lecture I gave at NYU, Emad Salem, reached out to me after years in the WITSEC program. He and his family had to go into hiding, protected by the U.S. Marshals, after he\u2019d served as the linchpin witness against the Sheikh in the \u201cDay of Terror\u201d trial. Now he was ready to tell his story.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.50.16-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-10253\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.50.16 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.50.16-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.50.16-PM.png 430w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.50.16-PM-300x265.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During a series of interviews Salem told me about a key piece of evidence in the Mustafa Shalabi homicide that had never surfaced in the media. That prompted the NYPD to reopen the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the Feds produced a series of FBI 302 memos identifying the killers, along with a second gunman in the Kahane assassination. The details were so ground-breaking that <em>The Jerusalem Post<\/em> did a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/International\/Sharon-was-Kahane-killers-target\">page one story<\/a><\/strong> on my findings, which \u00a0included the revelation that Ariel Sharon, Israel\u2019s former prime minister, had been one of Nosair\u2019s initial targets.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, while continuing to live under an assumed identity, Salem has regularly monitored the political events in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A FATWA FROM PRISON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On May 30, 2012 on the eve of the Egyptian presidential election, Salem alerted me that the website maintained by Sheikh Omar\u2019s family had issued a political fatwa from the imprisoned cleric endorsing the election of Mohamed Morsi.<\/p>\n<p>In that admonition, the blind sheikh reminded \u201cevery Muslim and citizen of Egypt who fears about his country, that he or she must elect Dr. Morsi, since he is the one representing Islam the most and representing the Revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.52.36-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-10256\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.52.36 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.52.36-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.52.36-PM.png 506w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.52.36-PM-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/a>For months prior to the election, followers of the Blind Sheikh had been camped outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, demanding his release. Now they were rallying in Tahrir Square. The day after Morsi\u2019s narrow victory, Emad Salem discovered that Sheikh Omar, who was supposed to get a single, fifteen-minute \u201chumanitarian\u201d call to his family each month, was able to make a second call; this time congratulating the president-elect.<\/p>\n<p>Then, within days of his election, at a rally in front of Abdel Rahman\u2019s family, Morsi returned the favor by declaring that he would press for the freedom of Sheikh Omar and other terrorists convicted in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BREITBART HEADLINES<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After Morsi\u2019s call for the Sheikh\u2019s release, the issue became a cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre on the U.S. political right. \u201cU.S. State Dept. Considers Release of Blind Sheikh to Egypt\u201d was the headline on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2012\/09\/18\/us-state-dept-to-considers-releasing-blind-sheikh-for-humanitarian-and-health-reasons\/\">Breitbart.com\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>in September, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, <em>The\u00a0New York Post\u00a0<\/em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2012\/09\/20\/o-eyes-blind-sheik-release\/\">ran a story<\/a><\/strong> referencing President Obama titled, \u201cO Eyes \u2018Blind Sheik\u2019 Release: GOPers Blast Idea to Appease Egypt.\u201d Another <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/video\/2013\/01\/07\/egypt-pres-o-obama-free-blind-sheik\/\">Breitbart story<\/a><\/strong> was headlined \u201cEgypt Pres To Obama: Free Terrorist Blind Sheikh.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.51.44-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-10255\" title=\"Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 4.51.44 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.51.44-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.51.44-PM.png 601w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-4.51.44-PM-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In response, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made it clear that the Sheikh had been rightfully convicted and she emphatically denied that the United States had plans to extradite him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened in New York twenty-three ago,\u201d says Emad Salem, \u201cis still causing blood to be spilled in the Middle East and threatening U.S. security. The Sheikh was the prince of jihad and even from inside a prison cell he wielded tremendous power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just today he told me that the Sheikh\u2019s family was asking the Trump Administration to release Abdel Rahman\u2019s body and return it to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to build a shrine for him there, in his birthplace of Fauom,\u201d he said. \u201cThat will make him a martyr for the Islamic terrorist resistance. It will become a rallying point for jihadis all over the world.
