Trump has used a slogan popularized by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2017\/01\/20\/president-trumps-america-first-slogan-was-popularized-by-nazi-sympathizers\/\">Nazi sympathizers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2022\/11\/trump-was-tricked-into-dining-with-too-many-antisemites.html\">dined with antisemites<\/a>, evoked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/trump-nazis-white-supremacists-kenosha-charlottesville-very-fine-people.html\">white supremacist tropes<\/a>, and demonized the press and his political foes as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/aug\/03\/trump-enemy-of-the-people-meaning-history\">enemy of the people<\/a>,\u201d to cite just a few examples of his allegedly Nazi-like behavior. Trump. Given, his choices for Cabinet and White House staff, his refusal to divest his holdings and release his tax returns so that his many conflicts of interest can be assessed and his continuing stream of Tweets denigrating protesters, political rivals, the intelligence community and journalists, it\u2019s clear that this platform has arrived none too soon.<\/p>\n<p>This week at his first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-press-conference-transcript.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>press conference<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 168 days, when he falsely accused CNN of airing \u201cfake news\u201d in its coverage of the dossier of alleged Russian <em>kompromat<\/em>, Mr. Trump told reporters, \u201cThat\u2019s something that Nazi Germany would have done and did do. I think it\u2019s a disgrace that information that was false and fake and never happened, got released.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One has to wonder whether the Third Reich reference, which began that day in one of his vitriolic early morning tweets, wasn\u2019t just another \u201cTrumpian slip,\u201d given the number of allusions to der Fuher that crept into his candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>By now it shouldn\u2019t have been a surprise. After, all, Mr. Trump is of <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/mother-jones-the-spy-who-wrote-the-trump-russia-memos-it-was-hair-raising-stuff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>German heritage<\/strong><\/a>. His father Fred, whom he reveres, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2016\/02\/28\/in-1927-donald-trumps-father-was-arrested-after-a-klan-riot-in-queens\/?utm_term=.cc6a52e09142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>was arrested at a KKK rally<\/strong><\/a> in 1927 and ex-wife <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/magazine\/2015\/07\/donald-ivana-trump-divorce-prenup-marie-brenner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ivana once revealed<\/strong><\/a> that her husband kept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/book-reviews\/adolf-hitler-2\/my-new-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u201cMy New Order,<\/strong><\/a>\u201d a book of Adolph Hitler\u2019s speeches, in a cabinet by their bed.<\/p>\n<p>Now, less than a week out from the inauguration, as we consider the path that led to Donald Trump\u2019s ascension, it\u2019s worth noting that the most effective tool in his political arsenal was first forged by<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Goebbels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Joseph Goebbels<\/strong><\/a>, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, who perfected \u201cThe Big Lie\u201d theory first enunciated in Vol. 1 Chapter 6 of Hitler\u2019s frightening manifesto, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mein_Kampf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mein Kampf.<\/strong><\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16647 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.42.41-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.42.41-AM.jpg 952w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.42.41-AM-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.42.41-AM-768x505.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.42.41-AM-800x526.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/>Goebbels later put it this way: \u201cIf you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and\/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s look back on how the 45<sup>th<\/sup> President of the United States worked that strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HIS BIGGEST &amp; MOST CONSISTENT LIE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump began his campaign with the bedrock lie of his candidacy: \u201cWe\u2019re going to build a wall and Mexico\u2019s going to pay for it.\u201d He reiterated it again at Wednesday\u2019s press conference. That same day Mexican President Enrique\u00a0Pe\u00f1a Nieto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/01\/trump-presser-mexico-border-wall-233482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>reiterated<\/strong><\/a> \u201cMexico will not pay for the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But again, like the F\u00fchrer, stomping his jack boots at a Nurenberg rally while Leni Riefenstahl filmed, Donald Trump wanted us to believe that if he said it long enough and with his usual audacious confidence, it would become a truth.<\/p>\n<p>There were some cheers in the room when he repeated the wall promise, but taking another page from Goebbels\u2019 rally playbook, he\u2019d already packed the press conference with a rooting section of \u201croughly 30 staff\u201d members,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2017\/01\/12\/trump_press_conference.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>denying entry<\/strong><\/a> to at least one legitimate reporter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CHANNELLING GOEBBELS<br \/>\nON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2015 after the first six months of his candidacy Politifact, the Pulitzer Prize Winning website, gave Mr. Trump their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/personalities\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u201cLie of the Year Award\u201d<\/strong><\/a> and issued a scorecard, rating his campaign statements. Four per cent were fact checked as \u201cTrue,\u201d thirty-three per cent were considered \u201cFalse\u201d and eighteen percent got the rating, \u201cPants on Fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On November 5<sup>th <\/sup>2016, three days before the election, The Toronto Sun\u2019s DC Bureau chief Daniel Dale and global economics reporter Tanya Talaga, totaled up an astonishing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/uselection\/2016\/11\/04\/donald-trump-the-unauthorized-database-of-false-things.html#analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>494 Trump falsehoods<\/strong><\/a> over a seven week period which they analyzed and sorted into 20 categories:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure, all politicians lie.,\u201d they wrote, \u201cBut<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/uselection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donald Trump<\/a> <\/strong>is in a class by himself. He lies strategically. He lies pointlessly. He lies about important things and meaningless things. But our scrutiny shows there is just no comparison in their level of accuracy on the campaign trail. At the three presidential debates, for example, we counted 104 false claims for Trump to 13 for Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>What Dale and Talaga termed, \u201cthe extreme, unprecedented quantity of Trump falsehoods,\u201d led to their fact checking every word out of his mouth from mid September until November 5<sup>th.<\/sup>\u00a0Their findings: \u201c560 false claims, or a neat 20 per day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOW IT\u2019S STARTING TO WEAR THIN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even from the man who created the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/09\/15\/politics\/donald-trump-obama-birther-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u201cbirther\u201d movement<\/strong><\/a> and questioned the legitimacy of the Obama presidency for years before suddenly folding before the election as he courted the Black vote, Donald Trump\u2019s flirtation with truth is starting to cost him, \u00a0among some of his most ardent supporters,<\/p>\n<p>Last week\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ussanews.com\/News1\/2017\/01\/06\/will-mexicos-gonna-pay-for-it-become-trumps-read-my-lips-no-new-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>a Tea Party website<\/strong><\/a> threw down the bullshit flag when discussing his big \u201cWall\u201d lie. \u201cThis phrase was uttered probably north of 100 times by Trump during the campaign,\u201d the site charged. \u201cIf he doesn\u2019t deliver and American taxpayers are stuck with $10-$70 billion to build and yearly maintenance fees in the billions as well, the Democrats are going to paint Trump as either an idiot or a liar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Having taken The White House, with the GOP in control of Congress, he may not care. That was no surprise when you consider that the Russians invented \u201cAgitprop;\u201d the old Cold War tradecraft term for creating disinformation. The practice dates back to the early days of post-Revolutionary Russia and was later honed to precision in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agitprop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Department for Agitation and Propaganda.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Six weeks before the release of the IC\u2019s report, The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/russian-propaganda-effort-helped-spread-fake-news-during-election-experts-say\/2016\/11\/24\/793903b6-8a40-4ca9-b712-716af66098fe_story.html?utm_term=.6edad1dc1bfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>published a piece<\/strong><\/a> on the work of four groups of researchers who\u2019d examined Russia\u2019s aggressive agitprop scheme in the 2016 campaign. Their conclusions dovetailed with what the professional spies found:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe flood of <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/why-facebook-and-google-are-struggling-to-purge-fake-news\/2016\/11\/15\/85022897-f765-422e-9f53-c720d1f20071_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fake news<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> this election season got support from a sophisticated Russian propaganda campaign that created and spread misleading articles online with the goal of punishing Democrat Hillary Clinton, helping Republican Donald Trump and undermining faith in American democracy, say independent researchers who tracked the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia\u2019s increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery \u2014 including thousands of botnets, teams of paid human \u2018trolls,\u2019 and networks of websites and social-media accounts \u2014 echoed and amplified right-wing sites across the Internet as they portrayed Clinton as a criminal hiding potentially fatal health problems and preparing to hand control of the nation to a shadowy cabal of global financiers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All that while Donald Trump steadfastly refused to release his tax returns. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/02\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-taxes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The NYT\u2019s report<\/strong><\/a> that he might have dodged up to a billion in taxes and The Wash Post\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-foundation-apparently-admits-to-violating-ban-on-self-dealing-new-filing-to-irs-shows\/2016\/11\/22\/893f6508-b0a9-11e6-8616-52b15787add0_story.html?utm_term=.6dfd97d474a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>blistering probes<\/strong><\/a> into The Trump Foundation didn\u2019t seem to matter to his largely white and blue collar base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LIES DURING THE TRANSITION\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since his election victory, despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/21\/politics\/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-popular-vote-final-count\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>a popular vote loss<\/strong> <\/a>of nearly 2.9 million which he falsely blamed on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/11\/trump-illegal-voting-clinton-231860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u201cvoter fraud,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> Mr. Trump has taken truth distortion to extraordinary new levels. How? By repeatedly branding reporting in the media that he doesn\u2019t like as \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That shouldn\u2019t be a surprise, since the principal internet platform for many of those bogus stories beyond RT was <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/category\/bannon-breitbart-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>breitbart.com<\/strong> <\/a>owned by <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/bloomberg-news-how-goldman-and-seinfeld-helped-put-steve-bannon-in-the-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Steve Bannon,<\/strong><\/a> who\u2019ll soon be White House Senior Counsel, sharing equal power with Chief of Staff-designee Reince Priebus. And considering Mr. Trump\u2019s use of \u201cThe Big Lie theory\u201d throughout the campaign, it\u2019s not much of a stretch to view Mr. Bannon as his modern day Goebbels.<\/p>\n<p>Like no other contemporary media figure, Steve Bannon has perfected the \u201cdark art\u201d of \u201cfake news\u201d and he\u2019s used it with reckless abandon both as a weapon and a shield.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to either foistering a fraudulent news story or hiding behind one, the ex-Goldman Sachs exec gives new meaning to Churchill\u2019s description of Russia itself: \u201cIt is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLATFORM FOR THE \u201cALT RIGHT\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In mid August, MediaMatters ran a piece listing some of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2016\/08\/17\/breitbart-news-worst-headlines\/212467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the more outrageous Brietbart headlines<\/a>. <\/strong>Just a month earlier\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2016\/08\/stephen-bannon-donald-trump-alt-right-breitbart-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mr. Bannon admitted<\/strong><\/a> that \u201cWe\u2019re the platform for the alt-right,\u201d a term embraced by White Nationalist Richard Spencer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/11\/richard-spencer-speech-npi\/508379\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>who raised his arm<\/strong><\/a> in a new kind of Trumpian Sieg Heil and chanted, \u201cHail Trump, hail our people, hail victory\u201d at a post-election rally.<\/p>\n<p>Still, on November 21<sup>st<\/sup>, folding the notion of \u201cfake news\u201d inside itself, Breitbart News <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-journalism\/2016\/11\/21\/fake-news-new-york-times-calls-bannon-white-nationalist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ran a piece<\/strong> <\/a>under the headline \u201cMore Fake News: <em>New York Times<\/em> Calls Bannon \u2018White Nationalist.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article by Joel B. Pollak insisted that, \u201cThe\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em> has run yet another fake news article \u2014 this time, an \u2018explainer\u2019 about \u2018white nationalism\u2019 that features a photograph of Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon under the headline <strong>\u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/22\/world\/americas\/white-nationalism-explained.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Nationalism, Explained<\/a>.\u2019<\/strong> Bannon is not a \u2018white nationalist.\u2019 In fact, he is not a racist at all, a fact attested to by everyone who has worked with him, including the diverse staff at Breitbart News.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it: if Breitbart News insists that <em>The Times<\/em> got it wrong, they must be wrong. Right? Of course not. But\u00a0since Bannon\u2019s new boss seems to measure the \u201ctruth\u201d based on the number of clicks a story gets, the endorsement of a half million followers seems to <em>make<\/em> it true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHY THIS IS SO DANGEROUS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent days, beyond whatever lies he tells, the President-elect is now labeling any news coverage he\u2019s not happy with as \u201cfake.\u201d Case in point: the controversy over the so-called \u201cdossier,\u201d assembled by former MI6 British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, who, <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/nyt-how-a-sensational-unverified-dossier-became-a-crisis-for-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>as the NYT reported,<\/strong><\/a> was first hired by a Republican to generate opposition research on Mr. Trump, then after his nomination, the funding for the project was reportedly taken over by Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night, on the eve of the news conference,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/cnn-intel-chiefs-presented-trump-with-claims-of-russian-efforts-to-compromise-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CNN broke a story<\/strong><\/a> reporting that \u201cClassified documents presented last week to President Obama and President-elect Trump included allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump\u2026 The allegations were presented in a two-page synopsis that was appended to a report on Russian interference in the 2016 election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was it. No discussion in the CNN piece on the details of the synopsis or the allegations. The full 35 page report by Steele, which contained sensational, but unsubstantiated allegations about Mr. Trump\u2019s conduct during a Moscow visit believed to be in 2013, was then posted on BuzzFeed.com<\/p>\n<p><strong>ATTACKING A REPORTER WITH<br \/>\nA \u201cREAL NEWS\u201d QUESTION:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-press-conference-transcript.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>at the press conference,<\/strong><\/a> Sean Spicer, the newly minted White House Press Secretary, began by putting BuzzFeed and CNN\u2019s vastly different coverage on the same level:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that BuzzFeed and CNN made the decision to run with this unsubstantiated claim is a sad and pathetic attempt to get clicks,\u201d Spicer told the assembled reporters. \u201cThe report is not an intelligence report, plain and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moments later, the President-elect declared with bravado that, \u201cCNN (was) going out of their way to build it up.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/politics\/2017\/01\/11\/donald-trump-jim-acosta-cnn-fake-news.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u00a0the video<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16645 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.39.01-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.39.01-AM.jpg 1476w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.39.01-AM-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.39.01-AM-1024x583.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.39.01-AM-768x437.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterlance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-10.39.01-AM-800x455.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/>At that point CNN\u2019s correspondent Jim Acosta spoke up:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>Since you\u2019re attacking us, can you give us a question? Mr. President-elect \u2014<\/p>\n<p>But Mr. Trump ignored him, pointing to another reporter and soliciting a question:<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0Go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>(continuing) Mr. President-elect, since you are attacking our news organization\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0(pointing away from him) Not you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>Can you give us a chance?<strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0Your organization is terrible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>You are attacking our news organization, can you give us a chance to ask a question, sir? Sir, can you\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0Quiet. Quiet<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>Mr. President-elect, can you say\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0(pointing to another reporter) She\u2019s asking a question, don\u2019t be rude. Don\u2019t be rude.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: <\/strong>Can you give us a question since you\u2019re attacking us? Can you give us a question?<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t be rude. No, I\u2019m not going to give you a question. I\u2019m not going to give you a question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>Can you state\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP:<\/strong>\u00a0You are fake news. (to the other reporter) Go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACOSTA: \u00a0<\/strong>Sir, can you state categorically that nobody \u2014 No, Mr. President-elect, that\u2019s not appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>After that, Donald Trump moved on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHY DOES THIS MATTER?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump\u2019s bullying tactics vs. the media have already begun to pay off for him. Last Sunday, January 8th, the President Elect Tweeted <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/usa-today-trump-tweets-his-anger-that-kellyanne-conway-interview-cut-short\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>an attack on Meet The Press,<\/strong><\/a> for airing just a minute of Chuck Todd\u2019s 10 minute interview with Ms. Conway. In short order, NBC News capitulated and ran <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/video\/full-kellyanne-conway-russia-did-not-succeed-in-attempts-to-sway-election-850203203603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the entire Q&amp;A online <\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When The President of the United States can interfere with a network\u2019s editorial judgment; when he has no fear of dodging the truth; when he can characterize any coverage he doesn\u2019t like as \u201cfake news;\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>when he can craft his own definition of right and wrong without consequence, it only follows that in <em>his<\/em> mind he can <em>obey<\/em> the laws he likes and <em>violate<\/em> those that don\u2019t fit his political and business agenda.<\/p>\n<p>In fact he\u2019s already said as much and he\u2019s said it to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/trump-tells-the-new-york-times-presidents-cant-have-a-conflict-of-interest-2016-11-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>The New York Times.<\/em><\/strong><\/a> In an interview with reporters and editors on November 22<sup>nd, <\/sup>discussing his epic business conflicts, Mr. Trump said, \u201cThe law\u2019s totally on my side, the president can\u2019t have a conflict of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">So far on this website<\/span> in the last month we\u2019ve documented several dozen of those conflicts in <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/category\/business-holdings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>20+ investigative stories<\/strong><\/a> from the world\u2019s top reporters.<\/p>\n<p>But in early December we got a hint as to whether Donald Trump\u2019s GOP colleagues will hold him to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/the-emoluments-clause-its-text-meaning-and-application-to-donald-j-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Emoluments Clause in The U.S. Constitution,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0which prohibits Presidents from accepting gifts from foreign leaders.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of The House Oversight Committee,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/republicans-trump-conflicts-of-interest_us_5849b995e4b08283d6b525fa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> told the HuffPost<\/strong><\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s sort of ridiculous to go after him when his financial disclosure is already online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Thursday night Mr. Chaffetz, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/politics\/ct-chaffetz-investigations-clinton-trump-20161202-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>boasted before the election<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that he had \u201ctwo years\u2019 worth of material already lined up\u201d to investigate Hillary Clinton if she\u2019d won, <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/nyt-g-o-p-lawmaker-hints-at-investigating-ethics-chief-critical-of-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>sent a chilling letter<\/strong><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/oge.gov\/Web\/OGE.nsf\/Organization\/Senior%20Leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Walter M. Shaub Jr.<\/strong> <\/a>head of the Office of Government Ethics. The letter contained a veiled threat that the nation\u2019s top ethics monitor would <em>himself<\/em> be investigated for criticizing The President-Elect over his many conflicting business ties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOME FAINT HOPE OF OVER-<br \/>\nSIGHT IN THE DAYS AHEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham, aghast over Mr. Trump\u2019s praise of Vladimir Putin, whom John LeCarr\u00e9 would\u2019ve called, \u201can ex-KGB hood,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/politico-mccain-and-graham-u-s-needs-to-hit-russia-hard-for-election-hacking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>have pledged<\/strong><\/a> to \u201chit back\u201d hard on multiple fronts from sanctions to the defensive use of the military if the new administration of \u201c45\u201d gets too cozy with the man he calls \u201ca great leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the<a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/1127-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> DOJ\u2019s Inspector General<\/strong><\/a> announced a wide ranging investigation into the conduct of FBI Director James Comey re: his multiple public statements on the Hillary Clinton email probe during the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>And late Friday GOP Sen. Richard Burr, joined with Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, the Ranking Member of The Intelligence Committee, to announce<a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/politico-disaster-for-trump-as-senate-intelligence-committee-to-investigate-trumprussia-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> a bi-partisan investigation<\/strong><\/a> into Russia\u2019s role in the election hack. One objective: to determine whether there was any communication between the Kremlin and the staffs of either candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Since the IC Report underscores how Russia\u2019s finger on the scale was weighted so heavily in Mr. Trump\u2019s favor, the campaign most vulnerable is likely to be his.<\/p>\n<p>But just\u00a0hours before the joint announcement Sen. Burr<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/01\/burr-says-intel-panel-will-investigate-possible-russia-trump-links-233621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u00a0went on record<\/strong> <\/a>as insisting that\u00a0the committee<em> didn\u2019t<\/em> plan to investigate any possible contacts between Trump representatives and Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Then, apparently under mounting pressure, he relented and the probe will involve some of the allegations raised in ex-spy Christopher Steele\u2019s \u201cdossier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One factor in his turnaround might have been the embarrassing revelation broken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/why-did-obama-dawdle-on-russias-hacking\/2017\/01\/12\/75f878a0-d90c-11e6-9a36-1d296534b31e_story.html?utm_term=.0a686e78503c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David Ignatius<\/strong> <\/a>of the Wash Post on Thursday, that Mr. Trump\u2019s pick for National Security Advisory, the mercurial <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/reuters-trump-adviser-flynn-held-multiple-calls-with-russian-envoy-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn,<\/strong><\/a> had \u201cphoned Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak several times on Dec. 29, the day that the Obama administration <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/obama-administration-announces-measures-to-punish-russia-for-2016-election-interference\/2016\/12\/29\/311db9d6-cdde-11e6-a87f-b917067331bb_story.html?utm_term=.512c117393be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced the expulsion<\/a> <\/strong>of 35 Russian officials as well as other measures in retaliation for the hacking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Mr. Trump\u2019s nominee for Secretary of State <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/huffpost-putin-pal-for-secretary-of-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rex Tillerson,<\/strong><\/a> who enjoys a hyper-friendly relationship with the Russian President, Lt. Gen. Flynn appeared on RT, got a speaking fee from that Russian cable network and was photographed seated next to Mr. Putin at a black tie RT dinner.<br \/>\n<strong>A FINAL NOTE OF CAUTION FOR NOW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before First Amendment\/transparency advocates think they might be taking some higher ground, it would be prudent to keep the cold hard truth in mind:<\/p>\n<p>Immense power is about to be conferred on Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>As to Dept. of Justice Inspector General Horowitz and FBI Director Comey, he has the power to fire them both.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell\u2019s wife Elaine Chao, is up to be Mr. Trump\u2019s Secretary of Transportation and the Kentucky Republican has <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/senate-republican-leader-backs-investigation-into-russian-hacking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>already rejected<\/strong><\/a> the kind of Special Select Committee that investigated the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals.<\/p>\n<p>The law firm Mr. Trump has hired to insure that he avoids those pesky conflicts of interest, won an award in 2016 as <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/fortune-donald-trumps-legal-team-won-a-russia-law-firm-of-the-year-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u201cRussia Law Firm of The Year.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So much for draining the swamp.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mr. Trump continues his early morning Twitter tirades, going after every critic from <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/thr-golden-globes-meryl-streep-talks-immigration-takes-aim-at-donald-januarytrump-in-passionate-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Meryl Streep<\/strong><\/a> to civil rights icon <a href=\"http:\/\/investigatingtrump.com\/lat-trump-kicks-off-martin-luther-king-weekend-by-attacking-civil-rights-legend-john-lewis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rep.
